A theory of development can also enforce a norm

Psychoanalysis made sexuality a legitimate subject of psychological inquiry, but its institutions and theories also pathologized sexual and gender diversity. A responsible history must include both contributions. The fact that a theory attends to unconscious conflict does not make its account of normality immune to the assumptions of its time. [301]

Karen Horney challenged aspects of Freud's account of femininity and the tendency to treat male experience as the standard. Helene Deutsch developed influential accounts of women's development that must be read for both their clinical influence and their restrictive assumptions. Joan Riviere's writing on masquerade asks how a gendered presentation can serve a relational and defensive function. It does not mean that every expression of femininity is false. [1] [270]

In plain English: an idea can help a therapist hear one patient's predicament while becoming harmful when turned into a rule about what all women or men are like.

Juliet Mitchell and Chodorow: different questions about social reproduction

Juliet Mitchell's engagement with psychoanalysis and feminism argued for taking unconscious sexual difference seriously without simply endorsing social inequality. Nancy Chodorow's work examined how gendered caregiving arrangements contribute to the reproduction of gendered experience. These are not identical projects. One asks how to read psychoanalysis as a theory rather than a prescription; another connects the organization of parenting and identifications with psychological development. [271] [205]

In plain English: saying that an arrangement helps produce a kind of person does not mean that arrangement is natural, inevitable or the best way to live.

Contemporary families, diverse caregiving and later developmental research complicate any universal causal story. A therapist should explore the patient's particular relationships rather than infer their inner world from household structure.

Recognition, multiplicity and the relational turn

Jessica Benjamin's recognition theory examines the difficulty of holding another person as a subject rather than an object to dominate or be dominated by. Muriel Dimen, Adrienne Harris and Virginia Goldner deepen the inquiry into gender, sexuality, power and contradiction. These contributions matter because the therapist's own gendered expectations become part of the encounter, not an objective platform outside it. [167] [206] [207] [234]

In plain English: “Be independent,” “show vulnerability,” or “accept your desire” can each become a demand to perform the therapist's preferred version of a person.

A clinical formulation should leave room for meanings that do not fit a single binary or developmental narrative. That does not make every account equally useful. It requires the clinician to show what an interpretation explains, what it leaves out and whose values it assumes.

From Stoller and McDougall to queer and trans-affirming inquiries

Robert Stoller's distinctions involving gender and sexuality and Joyce McDougall's exploration of erotic life contributed influential clinical vocabularies. Some historical terms and explanatory assumptions are now contested. Later writers including Ken Corbett, Avgi Saketopoulou and Griffin Hansbury investigate embodiment, gender, desire and analytic practice from different contemporary perspectives. They are not interchangeable spokespersons for all queer or trans people. [275] [239] [272] [273] [274]

In plain English: the aim is to understand the person's life and conflicts, not to determine which identity would satisfy the therapist's developmental theory.

Exploration and affirmation are not mutually exclusive. A clinician can respect a person's identity while being curious about suffering, relationships, uncertainty or change. “Curiosity” becomes misleading when it conceals a predetermined goal of changing sexual orientation or gender identity. Likewise, affirmation should not become an instruction that a patient must feel certain or have no conflicts.

Original fictional clinical sequence

Alex says they sometimes feel uneasy about how others perceive their gender and worries that a psychodynamic therapist will explain their identity as a reaction to their parents.

Therapist: I do not have a preferred identity for you to arrive at. What would you want us to understand about the uneasiness?

Alex: At work I feel I am watching myself all day. With friends it is different.

Therapist: What changes between those settings?

Alex describes hostility in one workplace relationship and ease with friends. The therapist learns about actual threat, self-monitoring and moments of freedom. Later Alex brings a family conflict, which can be explored on its own terms rather than treated as the hidden origin of identity.

Clinical consequence: the formulation differentiates identity, distress, environmental responses and internal meanings. It neither pathologizes an identity nor assumes that all suffering is external.

The history remains clinically active

A patient may arrive already expecting analytic judgment because of the profession's history. That expectation is not necessarily a distorted transference. The therapist's response, language and transparency matter. A credible contemporary account acknowledges the history and shows how technique has changed rather than declaring that all past problems have been solved.

The durable contribution of these debates is a more exact question about normality: whose account of a good life guides the work, and how can psychological freedom be pursued without prescribing its content?

Study task: examine a formulation containing “mature femininity,” “masculine independence” or another culturally loaded ideal. Translate it into specific capacities, wishes and difficulties. What remains clinically useful once the gender prescription is removed, and what was merely a norm disguised as explanation?
