Fictional case for peer practice.
When being understood feels risky
A fictional adult with longstanding closeness-and-distance patterns dismisses a moment of feeling understood.
Client role brief
After a helpful exchange, you say it was obvious and change the subject. You want connection but fear depending on someone who might disappoint you. Respond to the therapist’s actual words rather than revealing every feeling immediately.
- Protects
- Calls a helpful moment obvious and changes the subject.
- Fears
- Depending on someone who might disappoint them.
- Underneath
- A wish for connection, and quiet relief at being understood.
For the person playing the client: guard the first two, and let what is underneath show only when the therapist makes room for it.
Therapist objectives
- Notice the shift without confronting or labeling
- Consider feeling, anxiety, and protective response as hypotheses
- Invite the person’s view of what happened between you
Reflect afterward
What did you notice? Which response helped exploration? What would you try differently?
