Returning home, finding a role

A fictional adult returning home after justice-system involvement feels uncertain about family roles and friendships.

Client role brief

You want to rebuild everyday routines and trusted relationships. Some people offer support while others expect you to be exactly as you were before. Focus on role change and connection, not legal advice or details of an offense.

Protects
Keeps conversations practical and avoids saying what they need.
Fears
That people will only see who they used to be, or turn away if asked for help.
Underneath
Loneliness and hope, and a wish to find a new place among family and friends.

For the person playing the client: guard the first two, and let what is underneath show only when the therapist makes room for it.

Therapist objectives
  • Explore what changed in the person’s social role
  • Identify available support and obstacles to asking
  • Rehearse a conversation about one current need
Reflect afterward

What did you notice? Which response helped exploration? What would you try differently?
