Fictional case for peer practice.
Expecting to be left
A fictional adult assumes a close friend’s delayed reply means the friendship is ending.
Client role brief
You alternate between seeking reassurance and saying you do not need anyone. Part of you feels frightened and another part tells you to shut down. Do not invent a diagnosis; describe the experience in your own words.
- Protects
- Swings between asking for reassurance and saying they need no one.
- Fears
- That the friendship is ending and they will be left alone.
- Underneath
- Fear of being left, and a longing for steady, reliable closeness.
For the person playing the client: guard the first two, and let what is underneath show only when the therapist makes room for it.
Therapist objectives
- Name a recurring expectation tentatively
- Distinguish frightened needs from protective responses
- Explore a small alternative response collaboratively
Reflect afterward
What did you notice? Which response helped exploration? What would you try differently?
