Fictional case for peer practice.
The argument beneath the chores
A fictional couple argues about household tasks; one seeks reassurance and the other withdraws.
Client role brief
Choose one partner to play. One asks repeatedly whether they matter; the other goes quiet when they feel blamed. Describe a recent low-stakes disagreement. The therapist can practice mapping the cycle with one partner or, with three participants, both.
- Protects
- One partner presses for answers; the other goes quiet when they feel blamed.
- Fears
- Not mattering to each other, or failing and being criticized again.
- Underneath
- Both want to feel reached and wanted, and neither wants another fight.
For the person playing the client: guard the first two, and let what is underneath show only when the therapist makes room for it.
Therapist objectives
- Describe the shared pursue-withdraw cycle without blame
- Reflect each partner’s underlying feeling or need
- Invite one softer message with permission
Reflect afterward
What did you notice? Which response helped exploration? What would you try differently?
